The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of jobs created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
